A Winter Wonderland in the South West

From the ancient woodland of the Forest of Dean to the soaring spires of Gloucester Cathedral, the South West is home to both picturesque countryside and historic cities. On this festive holiday, you’ll be based in the Wye Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), for easy access to the region’s biggest attractions. You’ll also enjoy plenty of Christmas activities and entertainment, including winter markets and a traditional panto performance.

7-Day Accessible Holiday Itinerary

Your holiday begins with a visit to Ross-on-Wye’s excellent Christmas market. Next comes Bath’s glorious Georgian architecture and Regency history, where the atmospheric market is the perfect place to enjoy a warming mulled wine. The Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo is an explosion of colour, while a steam train adventure sees you explore the Forest of Dean by rail. There’s even time for a classic panto in Hereford and a trip to Gloucester to visit the remarkable cathedral.

Day 2 Festive Shopping & Sunday Roast
Christmas in the Cotswolds 4th Dec 21 Imgur copy 10 (2)

On our first full day in the Wye Valley, we’ll walk 10 minutes to the heart of Ross-on-Wye, a historic market town in Herefordshire. With a fantastic Christmas market, it’s a great opportunity to do a bit of Christmas shopping. Comprising more than 70 stalls, the market sells everything from handmade crafts and local artwork to fresh produce and mouthwatering treats.

In the afternoon, we’ll return to the hotel for a traditional Sunday lunch with all the trimmings. You’ll have the chance to get to know your fellow Limitless Travellers, and we'll have a few festive games and group activities to get everyone in the Christmas spirit.

Day 3 Bath Christmas Market

Bath’s gorgeous Georgian architecture and Roman history attract visitors from the world over and make it one of the prettiest cities in the UK. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Bath Abbey, the city’s Christmas market features over 150 wooden chalets selling handmade gifts, festive food, and local crafts. The festive lights, carolers and aroma of mulled wine make for a magical atmosphere.

Of course, there’s plenty to see and do beyond the Christmas market too. Fans of Regency-era history and literature will adore the city’s architecture (a number of sites were used during Bridgerton filming), while book-lovers can visit one of the country’s best bookshops, Topping & Co. The city’s cosy cafes are perfect for people-watching, and there’s a wealth of excellent lunch options.

Day 4 Butterfly Zoo
Butterfly Centre

Located a short distance from the hotel, the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo is a riot of colour and spectacular patterning that will give you a new appreciation for these beautiful creatures. The indoor butterfly house benefits from a tropical climate, which makes for a lovely contrast to the cold winter weather outside, and contains over 100 exotic species.

During your time at the Butterfly Zoo, you’ll have a chance to see every stage of the butterfly’s lifecycle, from eggs through caterpillars and chrysalises to the animal’s striking final transformation. Butterflies exploit a range of ingenious survival strategies, and you’ll learn a lot about how they avoid predators, as well as their natural habitat and behaviours. In the afternoon, we’ll head back to the hotel for a delicious dinner and some evening entertainment.

Day 5 Festive Steam Train
Artboard 5 Min 21

Nestled between the Severn and the Wye, the Forest of Dean encompasses a stretch of ancient woodland that’s famed for its biodiversity, early industrial heritage and beautiful forested landscapes. Home to several unique species, including wild boar and large colonies of Greater and Lesser Horseshoe bats, the forest is a delight to explore.

And we’ll be exploring it in style aboard the Dean Forest Railway steam train. A memorable railway ride through some of the most spectacular scenery in the west, the train takes you past pretty, rural villages, sweeping forested hillsides and beautiful winter landscapes. If we’re lucky, we might even have a smattering of snow for a truly festive experience! Following our steam train ride, we’ll head back to the hotel for dinner.

Day 6 Festive Panto

At Limitless Travel, we know that Christmas isn’t really Christmas without a good, old-fashioned panto! So we’ll be heading to the accessible Courtyard theatre in Hereford to get our festive fix. It’s a timeless holiday tradition, so make sure you’re ready for a bit of classic call and response. We want to hear you when it’s time to shout, “He’s behind you!”

Show timing will depend on ticket availability, though we often manage to catch the early evening showing. This gives you the rest of the day to enjoy your cosy Wye Valley hotel, relax with your fellow Limitless Travellers and take it easy. Ross-on-Wye is just a 10-minute walk away, so there’s always the opportunity to pop into town in the morning, too.

Day 7 Gloucester Cathedral & Christmas Shopping
Christmas in the Cotswolds 4th Dec 21 Imgur copy 3

Tucked between the Severn and the Cotswolds, Gloucester is rich with Roman and medieval history. Its most famous attraction remains its towering cathedral, which traces its origins back to the 7th century. With its spectacular fan-vaulted cloisters and awe-inspiring stained glass windows, it remains one of the finest pieces of medieval architecture in the UK.

As well as playing home to the tomb of Edward II, arguably England’s least capable monarch, it was also used as a filming location in the Harry Potter movies, where its stately corridors became Hogwarts’ magical hallways. Following our visit to the cathedral, we’ll enjoy an afternoon of shopping in Gloucester city centre – a great opportunity to pick up a few special pressies!

Day 8 Breakfast & Travel Home
Cavalier Limitless Blackpoolandlakes 200

Today, your Christmas in the Cotswolds & South West tour comes to an end. After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll board the accessible coach and depart for our various UK drop-off locations. Relax, reminisce with your fellow Limitless Travellers and take in the views. We’ll ensure you’re comfortable for the return journey and look forward to seeing you on your next Limitless holiday!
